The Sandwich Generation: Balancing Family and Sustainability

the sandwich generation

One of my favorite solar clients is 102. Her son – a diehard solar fan, husband, father, and grandfather – had a solar system on his Leimert Park home well before I got into the profession. As his mother’s full-time caregiver, he wanted more control over his monthly expenses. We installed a system on her Windsor Hills/View Park home over two years ago. Her panels immediately added about four (4) percent to her home’s value, per Redfin and Zillow estimations.  Additionally, she’s saving on her bill each month. And, he graciously shares both of his family success stories with any potential solar client I send his way. I, too, am a joyful member of the sandwich gang-gan. Four generations of my immediate family live within a 5-mile radius of Ladera and Westchester.

The sandwich generation is uniquely positioned at the crossroads of caring for aging parents and supporting their own children and grandchildren. This dual role, while fulfilling, comes with significant financial and emotional demands. Amid these responsibilities, sustainability often takes a back seat—but it doesn’t have to. Solar energy presents an opportunity to ease the strain on resources – and often fixed incomes – while promoting environmental stewardship.

Caring for multiple generations amplifies household energy consumption, from running HVAC systems to powering devices and appliances. This increased demand can lead to higher utility bills and a larger carbon footprint. For families in the sandwich generation, who are already stretched thin, finding ways to save money and live sustainably becomes essential. Solar energy offers a solution. By harnessing the sun’s power, families can significantly lower their electricity bills, freeing up funds for caregiving needs and future investments.

Moreover, solar panels reduce reliance on fossil fuels, helping to combat climate change. Grandparents benefit from a quieter, cleaner energy source, while children and grandchildren grow up witnessing a commitment to sustainability—a value that can inspire future generations.

The impact extends beyond individual households. As more families adopt solar, the cumulative effect contributes to a greener planet, ensuring a healthier future for all.
